Basic Passport Information

Q: Can I obtain a Jamaican passport even though I already have a British passport?

A:

Yes, both Jamaica and the United Kingdom recognize dual citizenship.

Q: How long is a Jamaican passport valid?

A:

The Jamaican passport is valid for ten years for an adult and five years for children 17 years and under.

Q: How long does it take to process the passport?

A:

Passport Applications are processed by the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) in Jamaica. Please allow, therefore, a MINIMUM of ninety (90)days  for this process to be completed and the passport(s) returned to the High Commission in London. For mailed-in applications, an additional two (2) weeks should be allowed i.e. a total of twelve (12) weeks.

Q: Can my passport be processed any quicker?

A:

No, it cannot. An applicant may, however, obtain an Emergency Travel document if an urgent need for travel should arise and provided he or she is Jamaican.

Q: Do I need to appear in person to apply for a passport?

A:

First-time applicants should appear in person when applying for a passport.

In the case of a minor (person under 18 years of age), the parent or legal guardian should complete the relevant sections of the application form. The child is also required to appear in person for all categories of passport applications, including first time, renewal or replacement applications. The only exceptions are children under the age of three years. Persons who are renewing a passport that was issued when they were a minor will also need to appear in person.

Adults who are renewing their passport need not appear in person and may send their old passport along with a bearer, who would be required to produce a letter of authorisation to collect the passport. The High Commission or the Jamaican Consulate (Birmingham) reserves the right to ask an applicant to appear in person for an interview to support his or her passport application. Applicants who report a lost or damaged passport may also be required to appear in person to account for the passport.

Q: How do I know whether my photographs are suitable for my passport?

A:

There are specific requirements that must be met when submitting passport photographs. These requirements are in keeping with the criteria determined by the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency of Jamaica (PICA). Please see detailed list on this website under the Section entitled, Jamaican Citizens, subsection Passport and Passport Photographs
